Volumetric Apps

Windows Volumetric Apps is a Microsoft Mixed Reality initiative that lets developers extend an existing Windows app into 3D space with just a few lines of code, with changes made in the 2D app reflecting live in the volumetric version in real time. I've been the lead designer on the project since the beginning.

Challenge

2D apps were never designed with depth in mind. Translating them into volumetric space without losing their established UX meant rethinking every fundamental: how panels anchor to the physical world, how users resize and reposition content with their hands, and how focus and attention work when content can exist at any depth. The framework had to be extensible enough to serve dozens of apps without requiring each team to reinvent spatial interaction from scratch.

My Role

I own the core UX and interaction design for the project: how volumetric app panels anchor to the world, how users resize and navigate them in 3D, and how the SDK's design language extends Microsoft's Fluent system into spatial computing.
